Read about the leaders’ plans, and remember what Jesus has already said about what awaits him.
Commentary
There are two days left until Passover. The chief priests and the teachers of the law are looking for a way to arrest Jesus by deception and kill him. But they say: Not during the festival, or there will be an uproar among the people.
I notice how shrewd the plan is. No one wanted a revolt. No one wanted blood in the streets during the festival. They wanted to do it quietly, without witnesses, when it suited them.
There is something frightening about how rational evil can be. It does not shout. It calculates. It waits for the right moment.
But it did not happen as they planned. It happened during the festival itself, in the midst of Passover, when the lambs were slaughtered. They thought they controlled the timing. But another hand held it.
